DAY DREAMING

These cold winter days find me sitting close to the wood stove daydreaming. Not dreams of future flower gardens or new vegetable seedlings, or even new rug hooking patterns, but of new feathered friends. Saturday I received my Hobby Farm and Hobby Home magazines, but look what else arrived in my mailbox, Murry McMurray Hatchery Catalog. Perusing this catalog can't help but put a smile on one's face.

And lookie here: Frizzles. I fell for the frizzle the first time I laid eyes on one at our local county fair. Their appearance looks as if it had been caught in a windstorm and their feathers blown backwards. Or as if one had stuck it's feather in an electrical outlet and the end result was the curly effect.
And then there is the fancy Top Hatter Polish. This bird appeared a little high strung, but then again most birds appear high strung at the county fair. I'm not sure if the Polish have an attitude or not, but with that mop on their head they certainly deserve one.

I still have a few months to daydream and of course there is a certain someone I need to talk this over with. And no it's not Winslow Homer. But really when you think about it chickens are like shoes, you just can never have to many!

I could not agree more, I have such an affection for my chickens, to me they symbolize everything I want out of life. I am looking forward to ordering some new breeds this spring too. Heres to daydreaming about happy chickens!

Hah! Like shoes, I LOVE that! If you get frizzles and Polish Cresteds, I may need to visit. Field trip!

I couldn't agree more! I wouldn't dare look through a hatchery catalog. Next thing I know I would be ordering more. :) The Frizzles are so cute! Don't tell my husband but I do dream of having Bantams and a Goose one day.

I thought I got over my lust for books, then I got chicks!! The same thing has happened to me. Now my daughter-in-law and she lives in town!! I keep expanding the chicken house to add more chicks, but it does seem to take over. But chickens heal so many things... Thanks for you post!!

You read my mind!! I've been looking at chicken catalogs and daydreaming, too! And I have about 2 dozen three month old chickens! I don't need anymore, but it's so tough to not want more... -Lynn

I got carried away with my last order and got too many for the size of my coop. But gradually I have them back down to the right amount.

I must say I could have many chickens for I find them a delight.
I guess you know that from my blog!

Oh my oh my, I couldn't bear to look at that catalog. I want them all! I'm trying to figure out how to house more birds without building another hen house!

Your blog is so nice!

So, I can weigh in a bit about the White Crested Black Polish breed. My Dottie is a white crested black polish and yes (!), she is quite high strung and often very skittish. Because of her different appearance, she frequently gets those pretty head feathers pecked right off by the other hens. Because she stands out looks and behavior-wise, she is at the very bottom of the pecking order. I feel so badly for her and try to protect her as much as I can, but I would definitely think twice before ever having just one in a flock of other standard (and hardier) breeds again. All that said, she is my sweetheart and a delight to have around - she is SO full of personality and literally "talks" to me in her crazy chatter whenever I'm around.

I love my chickens, I love them so much that I put 14 in an incubator to make more!! I had Polish last summer, it didn't go well with my set up. Good luck with adding more!

We got 4 black stars at 18 weeks from Murray McMUrray last year and they are my pride and joy layers!

Nice to meet you btw, my name is Lisa.
