MY NIGHT TIME MISSION

Tools- one headlamp... One flash light..
One crazed chicken mama... My midnight mission-mite search. Nesting boxes examined...

All clear... Ten pink derrieres checked...all clear
As far as I can tell no night time mite feeding going on in here. Sorry from the intrusion ladies, your behavior has earned extra blueberries in your morning oatmeal. Sleep tight girls, don't let the bed bugs bite!
Love, one happy chicken mama....

Is it warm in there? Do the mite only come out at night? Like the freaks?

While at work today, a friend of mine said she would give me some of her hens. I can't tell you how excited I was to hear this.
But do I have to check butts on them?

Julie, I *love* you - you are SO my kindred spirit! Do you KNOW how many stealth, nighttime, head-lamp missions I've performed around here?! And not just to the chicken coop, my friend, so just WAIT until your sweet farm adds new members! LOL
I'm so glad your girls and coop are MITE-FREE...
Carry on with your molting, then, girls!
With my headlamp hanging by the door, your chicken pal,
-danni :-)

So glad it isn't mites! I've been dusting the coop occasionally with diatomaceous earth, and putting some in their feed too to prevent mites and worms. You might try that just as a preventative. They do look happy, and that is what counts -- if they were miserable it would be evident.

Good luck

I wouldn't even know what a mite looked like. Did you think mites were causing the bald bottoms? I had no idea you'd have to do body searches to keep your chickens healthy. Love the headlamp though. I seriously thought of getting one when I use to dremel my dogs nails so I would be able to see the quick better. Old eyes need better light.

We are going to raise chickens this spring. Didn't you had to "mite check". Do you do that every night:?

What breed or breeds do you have:?
