THE CONWAY SCENIC RAILROAD

Fall is the season of nature's beauty and one way to appreciate nature's spectacular scenery is to take a train ride. This is the Conway Scenic Railroad train located in North Conway, New Hampshire. This train leaves North Conway and heads to Crawford Notch via Intervale, Glen and Bartlett, New Hampshire. This line was established in 1875 and will climb more than 1300 hundred feet to the "Gateway to the Notch." Sunday was a perfect day for such a train ride, the sun was shining and the air crisp and cool. We had packed a picnic and soon boarded the coach car. The fee for our trip was $56.00 dollars per person. We certainly felt we got our money's worth.
This railroad follows the Saco River Valley Northwestward to the headwaters at the top of Crawford Notch. This train winds through the Presidential Mountain range, with a starting elevation of 535 feet. This particular train run was the last of the season- it's destination, Fabyan a 5 1/2 hour round trip ride with an elevation of 1575 feet. The views were spectacular and behold off in the distance the mighty Mt. Washington- home to the world's worst weather. Do you notice in the far off distance the distinct white?
why yes that would be SNOW....It was such a clear and vibrant day you could visibly make out the Mt. Washington Observatory and it's adjacent buildings.
Here in New England it appears the foliage has reached it's peak. Friday a rain storm is predicted with heavy winds, winds that will most likely remove the color from the trees. So, If you haven't had the opportunity to enjoy nature's spectacular offering, get out and do so before it's to late!

What a hoot, Dan and I were there on Sunday, too. Unfortunately, we opted for the shorter train ride to Bartlett, and it wasn't as scenic as yours. And I will say packing a picnic basket was an excellent idea.

We had a fun drive over Hurricane Mountain and on the way home, I found my new cupboard!

I wish I'd known you were going to be there, we could have planned a meet up.

Lovely post, that area is stunning and the colors were perfect.

Gorgeous scenery. Sounds like fun. I hope we still have a few weeks of color left. I still haven't captured the perfect Fall photo.

What a great day trip! We have something similar in northern Ontario. The fall foliage is beautiful up there, and there's a train excursion that travels up to Agawa Canyon. I remember making the trip as a kid and I would love to do it again sometime but I think I'd like to try yours too. Trains and nature are a good combination!

Mt. Washington is great. My sister has a condo in Bretton Woods and the first time I saw the fall foliage on the mountains and in the valleys it took my breath away. Beautiful photos! The train ride looked like fun too.

Just beautiful and will make a point of doing that next fall. I have seen that train leaving but never have taken a ride. Thanks for reminding me how beautiful New Hampshire is.

You go take the best trips! I loved taking a train ride with you. Now I know where Mt Washington is, I always am on AccuWeather and they are always talking about Mt Washington. Now I know. I have met so many wonderful people all over the US and Canada that I have turned into a weather junkie watching all of the weather. We never have weather. Thank you for your very sweet comment, I always hope someday I can visit in Maine on my way to Canada to see where Anne of Green Gables lived. Enjoy your fall while you can, it looks like a storm is coming.

What a great train ride, I had no idea that North Conway had a railway. I was up there last year but we did the Kancamagus Highway over to Lincoln and it was cloudy and wet so we had nothing like the views that you had. Hope you keep the Fall colours a while longer.

Such beautiful pictures. Thanks so much for sharing. Down here in Missouri, we are still in the midst of the changing leaves, although it doesn't seem to be as spectacular as some years. I guess it just didn't get cold enough.

Julie, I'd love to find all the great train trips and just take them all. There is one here that goes through West Virginia and follows the Potomac River. It's just gorgeous. If you take the early trip, you can see eagles flying up and down the river and resting in the tall trees. It's an amazing sight and the rest of scenery is wonderful too. I love the photos you took of your trip. And I can't believe there's snow on the mountain already!!
