WINSLOW HOMER

He is just a little dog, my Winslow Homer. He came to live at Dog Trot Farm nine years ago traveling all the way from Kansas. His mother's name was Julie Dee and mine, Julie with my middle initial D. It was fate and it was meant to be. That particular Saturday morning in February DH and I left Dog Trot to run errands. On our list, a new shedding brush for our dog Chloe. In the past our two dogs have been rough coated Collies, one of the most gentle and loving breeds of dogs. So to make a long story short.... instead of returning home with that new brush we arrived home with a puppy.... Winslow Homer. It has been a decision that we have never regretted. Winslow is now our only dog since Chloe's passing, he is a little dog with a big personality and a loyal and faithful companion. This week DH and I noticed Winslow was not quite himself, he was just to darn quiet. We thought the dreaded FLEAS.... lots of itching and chewing going on.... So Monday afternoon off to the veterinarian we headed. ONE FLEA was discovered and a nice healthy flea allergy. Winslow returned the following morning to spend the DAY for blood tests and x-rays....the diagnosis, Winslow Homer is now an insulin dependent diabetic....Twice daily for the rest of his life he will require insulin shots.... weekly blood sugar checks and once monthly full body workups. Just as with humans there is a lot of highs and lows with this disease however, Winslow's mom and dad are ready to take on the challenge. Surprisingly, I have become quite proficient in administering his shots, who knew?....I know he is just a little dog, but if you could find it in your heart to say a little prayer for him we here at Dog Trot Farm sure would be ever so grateful....thank you to our friends ~Julie&Winslow Homer~

I will, When I saw the title of your blog, I sat here and read all the while praying he was okay. I am so glad that it is something that can be treated. My sisters dog got like that too and I would give her dog shots. After just loosing my dog, I sure didn't want you to loose yours.
Poor guy.
Take care. You and Winslow Homer.

My beautiful Roxy was put to sleep July 17,2008. She was diagnosed with diabetes but sadly we could not afford the veterinarian's estimated cost to keep her alive. We had at the time, one child in college. One going in that September and another going in the year after that. You are very fortunate to be able to give him the care that he deserves as a member of your family. We were haunted by our decision. We just couldn't do it. I will absolutely say a prayer for Winslow that he adjusts to his illness and that he can live a happy pain free life.

Ah, Julie, of course we will say a little prayer for your feisty little dog. Rory is a bit under the weather today too, as he went for neutering today. He's drowsy and a bit disoriented. Two sweet little fellows!

Julie of course we will say prayers for Winslow, but he couldn't be in better hands. Oooo the shot thing. Holly, our kitty from way back in the 70's, I had to give her shots and Country Cat too. Then I have given my share of shots to horses and then I gave CH his allergy shots! I am not surprised you can do the shot thing :) Winslow take your meds, get plenty of exercise and watch your diet, no cheating on your diet! You will be just fine, Mama Julie will take care of you!

Little Winslow Homer will be in my thoughts. I'm so glad that what he has is treatable, when I saw the title of your post I feared the worst. Thank goodness I was wrong.

We love you Winslow Homer!
Healing thoughts and wishes are being sent to you from your pals (critter and human) in Oregon.
Good job on the injections, Julie! It takes quite a bit of mental build-up to give that first one, doesn't it? lol

Oh Julie, my dear blog friend, I am so sorry about Winslow-Homer. I am just relieved that it is something you can treat and you feel comfortable doing. I know how much he means to you all. My oldest dog Pappy has been diagnosed with cancer (I am going to blog about it sometime soon). He is getting chemo now. Anyway--I am praying for Winslow-Homer and your family.
Amy-hugs and prayers

I have a cat that was diagnosed with diabetes 4.5 years ago. At the time the vet thought that we might be able to extend his life a year or so with twice daily insulin shots. He is now almost 15 years old and still hunting and catching mice and chipmunks frequently. Hope your Winslow has the same good luck as my Oliver cat has.
