THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER....

Like many of you, we here at Dog Trot Farm have been enduring a heatwave. Here in Maine a heatwave may last a few days to a week, but it is usually short lived. I have to admit a southern lady I would not make. My hat goes off to you ladies... how is it you endure months of heat and humidity and show no visible signs of discomfort...well...it is beyond my comprehension. I perspire, sweat, my clothes wrinkle, and my hair has a mind of it's own. Southern ladies appear perfectly coiffed, not a hair out of place, nor sweat on the brow and never seem to complain. So I ask... spill the beans will ya ladies... let the rest of us gals in on your secret... Speaking of heat... I decided to try an experiment one of which we've all seen or heard of... frying an egg on sun soaked pavement.... no this is not my brain on drugs...

This is my brain in hot... humid... weather....scrambled...
This heat and humidity has provoked my flower gardens into reaching their prime a bit early

And speaking of heat... Winslow Homer received a haircut...well....okay....a shave....Winslow's grooming had taken a back seat due to a newly discovered medical condition...a collapsible trachea....this added to his prior medical conditions... grooming became low on the priority list... he is a wee bit embarrassed over this new look....and yes... there were a few snickers from the gals at the veterinary ....but he quickly forgave them...one needs a strong personality to carry off this look...especially when you sport a stripe running down your back...

little man... you have a face only a mother could love....stripe and all....

Gladys....she and the girls are staying cool...watermelon has become a favorite summer treat... dust baths in freshly misted soil ... refreshing water jugs frequently all of which are a priority in hot weather... Don Juan...well...I have to admit he has captured my heart... is on his way to perfecting his crow...
and slowly gaining the attention from the rest of the girls... his presence is known...

I do hope you are all well... staying cool and enjoying the summer...and let me just say 35 minutes of daylight gone!

I noticed this week that I am getting up in the dark again. It just fills me with such dread, I hate getting up in the dark.
My chickens have been dining on watermelon too.
I love your little rooster he is so beautiful.
Any tips about look cool? I don't know I am just hot and sweaty all of the time. My clothes are wrinkled and my hair stays wet all day.
I love the new hair cut on Winslow Homer I think he looks pretty handsome.
Try and stay cool though.

Today we had our first real summer day! It was 23C, which is 73F and it felt wonderful. Rory hasn't yet had a summer hair cut - no need this year.

I think Winslow Homers stripe is very fetching! We've been hearing about the heatwave in the US, I feel quite faint at the thought of it and am glad I live in the nice, temperate UK!

Heat or no heat, your gardens are stunning! I bought my first shrub--a butterfly bush for the future gardens yesterday. It's a deep purple. Poor little Winslow. He does look sweet, even with his little mohawk. Gus is in desperate need of grooming. When I get my car...he'll be getting a much needed bath!
I love seeing pics of the chicks!
Stay cool,
Courtney

I've been in Maine all week and it's been a "scortcha" as they say! My sister witnessed a shoving match on the beach for a shady spot!

I think Winslow Homer looks handsome! I like the "Mohawk" look he has with that stripe!

I dread the summer days getting shorter, I look forward to them all year long! I think we should have a daylight savings time on July 31st for an extra hour of day light!

Keep cool! The heat wave has broken!

Throw hot flashes into the mix and you have one angry woman. The heat is killing me and I have air conditioning. I love all your photos of course. Winslow looks handsome with his haircut. The watermelon is such a nice treat for the chickens. I wish I had a few girls of my own to take care of. Stay cool!!

Winslow Homer is cute no matter what the "do" :)
Love all your flower pictures. Gorgeous blooms! I hate that the days are getting shorter and it is almost August. Where has the summer gone? Even with all the heat and humdity, I prefer this over winter any day of the week!
Pug hugs :)

Hot here also. But normal heat, not like what you are experiencing. Seems like I'm always in a state of sweat. Winslow Homer is darling in his new do.

And Gladys with her head in the watermelon? Not only is that hysterical... but I'm sure most of us feel that way about this summer's heat! lol!

I've lived in the South all my life, so I feel qualified to say...we complain alot, we don't know how we stand it either, we talk continuously about looking forward to fall, and we wonder frequently how our grandparents ever made it through the summers without airconditioning! I can honestly say we never get used to the heat and humidity. And by 9 AM we're finished with gardening for the day! But thank you for the compliments - they made me smile and maybe we do make it look easier than it is. I will say one thing though - southern women don't sweat - we glisten! LOL
