January...winter's blast is in full swing here in New England...this morning's temperature...a big fat zero...long johns and wool socks become a girl's best friend... early morning finds everyone in the hen house huddled together. I am of the belief that a heat lamp is beneficial to a hen's well being during the long cold winter months...along with warm oatmeal and Bag Balm. Oatmeal to warm the crop and Bag Balm to aid in frostbite. Phoebe..adorned in her winter coat...some girls need a little time to themselves regardless the temperature...
others dare not venture outdoors... Don Juan keeps a tight rein on his women...The Don is patiently waiting for his true love Josephine to return from maternity leave...she remains safely tucked in a cage in the coop with her babes... deer grace our field traveling on ice crusted snow...
the egret points south...
there is vacancy in the old birdhouse...heat not included...snow on the pumpkin...Enough fluff here's the real scoop...it is damn cold here...I need to get outside and move...as in exercise...dust off my snow shoes...I find, just as Randy in the movie A Christmas Story...when layered up in clothing it is most difficult to move...in the woods I might fall...the wolves might devour me...they wouldn't need to eat again till spring...I need Weight Watchers...I want to look like Kate Winslet...I love Kate Winslet...I have a very bad habit...television...I don't actually watch it...it's my background noise...I hear bits and pieces...some so shocking that I actually do watch with my mouth hanging wide open...truly....where do they find these people...a women who is addicted to eating her dearly departed husband's ashes...another who sniffs gasoline and carries it with her where ever she goes...one lady consumes rocks...rocks...and another dryer lint...why in the world would you admit to something such as this...and yes, I know who Snookie is...shameful...Martha has been cancelled...and they have gone and brought back Fear Factor...I really need to get out of the house more...stay tuned...Goodnight from Dog Trot Farm...Oh and I desperately need a pedicure...I ripped a hole in my sheet last night...

Finally, For some reason I was having problems commenting. I loved your post today. It sounds cold and looks cold.I love the way you write a story. Poor Girls must be cold. Stay warm Cheri
Beautiful pics of your chickens! And those shots of the deer leaping across your fields!! And that last picture of the sunrise or sunset...gorgeous! Stay warm my friend.
Tammy
You crack me up, What on earth kind of show tells you about people who eat rocks and ashes and dryer lint? If you had those problems why would you get on TV and tell the whole world, It really does sound nice and cozy.
I love your pictures of the deer. Your hens too.
They cancelled Martha? Wow, I am hoping for some winter weather next week.
I love reading your stories them make me laugh. Have a lovely evening.
Julie,
I so identify with this post...... except for the chickens!
Winters are long here even if the weather hasn't been that bad. I don't watch much tv except for the news. I read and listen to talk shows on XM radio in my studio. As you know I spend a ghastly amount of time on the computer! But we all need our vices..... especially to survive the winters! ( My inquiring mind wants to know..... just how does one eat a rock???.... LOL!)
Hugs from WI!

those are some fluffy chickens!
Oh my gosh, I'm laughing my head off! First of all, your pictures are incredible. The deer, wow, the sunset, wow, I love the chickens. But, I must admit I've seen some of those shows...purely by accident of course. I know one can get addicted to them. I must get out too, my fat behind is having a tough time getting off the couch. It's been pretty cold here too, 68 to 70 degrees this week. Ha ha sorry, don't mean to rub it in. Blessings.
You cracked me up! Especially about the pedicure! LOL!!! Because I started scrubbing my heals, feet & toes to get ready for Spring sandals!
The chicks are adorable, can't wait to see some babies! Nice shot of the deer running through the field.
I for the life of me can't imagine why people would aire their "craziness" on nat'l tv!!! I'm getting so I just listen to music during the day when I'm home. I get more done! LOL!
Keep warm and have a great week!
To me Cold is Cold.once it goes down to 35 degrees I do NOT like going outside. I pace back and forth a lot so I figure that is enough exercise (going from T V room to the kitchen to get a piece of Fudge) I figure I have walked off the calories :)
Better stay warm if you go out. Very painful when your fingers or toes freeze. I will have to go out tomorrow to get ink for my printer so I can print shipping labels but DH always warms the car before I even go out the door :)
Hugs

Can't believe they cancelled Martha - it's the only TV show I watch when I'm in the US! I rarely watch it here either because there's very little worth watching. Our TV is on for the sports programmes mostly, DH is keen on football and cricket.
Winter has arived here too, no snow but temps are right down 22F when I got up this morning and a thick frost everywhere. Great shots of the deer.
Hi Julie, yeah, -11 wind chill here yesterday and today promises to be a balmy 12 degrees. My rooster is TERRIFIED of the snow, so now all the girls stay in the coop with him, none of them will come out. Not good for that feather plucking, as you can imagine. I put the girls heat lamp on the past two nights as well...my friend tells me I pamper my chickens too much. Whatever, I figure if your feathers have been plucked off you deserve a little help with the whole cold survival thing.
Love the photos, and I don't know about you, but I'm so ready for spring this year. Hasn't been that cold, but I'm just ready. Peace to you, ~Vonnie
You are funny!! I loved this post. TV is truly outrageous, isn't it? I'm thinking of working Weight Watchers again. I can't go on like this living on M&M cookies! Plus, I don't think rug hooking, spinning, and knitting count as aerobic exercise! LOL
I love your pictures. The one of the deer is fab.
Stay warm...it's supposed to be balmy in the 20s today!
Hugs,
Courtney
Julie ~
Wonderful post and beautiful pictures!
People wonder why I don't have a working TV. It's because I'd get sucked in to those crazy shows you referred to and I'd never get anything done!
Hugs :)

I love Bag Balm. Very nice for my rabbit's ears! Do you keep it in the house so it stays soft? Left in the barn it becomes a frozen block (spoken from experience.)
hahahaha!! Julie way more info than we need to know!! hahahaha!! You need to take a trip to Alabama where its balmy and the leaves need to be raked!!! Love the photos! The deer look like little toys!! hahaha! that last picture is beautiful!!
Some very pretty pictures Julie! Fun to see the girls. It is 55 degrees here at 8:46am. I don't get it. Cold front tonight coming thru maybe a skiff of snow! Using the new camera?
OMG, what a laugh! Umm, what kind of shows are you watching?? LOL I don't watch The Bachelor but brutally mock the promos. Yes, finding true love by test driving 25 women......Seriously?? Hahaha
And it is sad, I know who Snookie is also
Its snowing here and gloomy. BUT the snow did warm the air up a bit. Like you I have a red heat lamp in the chicken house.

My husband ripped a hoe in my favorite sheet set. what a bummer.
Julie...this post cracked me up. So real.
Oh Julie, I love your post. You are a hoot. You got me laughing and I had to put Band-Aids on both my thumbs. My skin is so dry that they cracked up reading this post.... well, not really but I did had to put Band-Aids on my thumbs for real because cracks in my dry skin.
I pretty well just watch the news too, but I've seen some of those reality shows. Some are totally ridiculous. Some people have no shame or common sense.
Love your pictures. Stay safe and warm. JB
our bird house has a flying squirrel in it,it is next to the motion light on the garage. We kept seeing the light go on and couldn't figure it out until we saw it fly to the near by tree.
