GOODBYE FEBRUARY~

February, traditionally is the snowiest month in Maine...due to this fact I seem to purchase the majority of cut flowers in this month...The simple elegance of tulips and daffodils can't help but brighten my day.
It appears this year the month of March will be coming "in" with the "roar" of a lion. A snowstorm is heading our way, ten to fourteen inches of heavy wet snow is predicted. We seasoned Mainers know enough to keep the plows on our trucks till the end of April, while snow blowers and shovels remain close at hand, also... strategically placed...are the Bean boots...Due to the lack of snow and cold weather winter activities have taken a back seat, popular sledding hills have remained quiet, ice skating and fishing derbys have been cancelled due to the thinness of the ice, even my snowshoes have remained quiet...now, my girls on the other hand have become and continue to be quite vocal...Spring fever has hit the coop...specifically, Don Juan and his son Ramon...their randiness continues to annoy my older girls...they are ladies and feel they should be treated as such... their preference is to dine in peace...and quiet...they take no kindness to "rear end" assaults...or cold feet...Oh spring cannot come soon enough to the girls of Dog Trot Farm...those wonder lust days of warm dirt baths and green grass feeds seemed to have been in a wings reach...I don't have the heart to tell them winter is returning...in the morning...I will trudge to the coop with a breakfast of warm oatmeal and raisins and upon my return will sit by the warmth of the wood stove and stare at my tulips and dream of the warm days yet to come...

I heard that storm is heading your way - I hope it's not too bad. February is leaving us in a storm of sleet - it's been unseasonably cold. I'm going to treat myself to the biggest bunch of tulips tomorrow!

Julie,
The storm headed your way just passed through here last night and today! LOTS ( 11 inches) of heavy white stuff! Poor chickies...... we were all spoiled with the mild winter we've been having!
Hunker down and keep the fresh tulips nearby!
Happy March 1st from WI!!

I love the picture of tulips and the girls. i had to laugh at the rear end assaults and cold feet. The poor girls.
I love the little foot print they leave in the snow.

I hope that the snow will not stay around for long. Stay warm and cosy. Hugs. JB

I think those tulips are beautiful. We have had so few storms this year and we will have one tonight and tomorrow. It will be nice. I now can sit by the fire. I haven't been able to since I had to boys. Your hens look so good. I got 11 eggs today. I am so glad that egg production is coming up. It is nice to not have to buy eggs.
Have a nice snowy day on your first day of March.

I loved this post, and your stories about your girls and boys :) You are such a great chicken keeper, spoiling your babies on a cold morning! Hope your return to winter is extremely short and sweet. What a weird season we've had here in MO. Tornadoes, for goodness sake.. and our grass is getting so green. Peeper frogs are singing early on the pond. Wow. Stay safe! -Tammy

I'm with the girls of Dog Trot Farm on the issue of Spring can't come soon enough! I hate cold feeties, I prefer mine buried in the sand and surf in Florida!

Your tulips are lovely. I agree that it helps to have fresh flowers in the house when the weather is dreary.

Always fun to see pics of your girls.

After reading this wonderful post, you have inspired me to do a post on my own Bean Boots. I have been wearing them for 34 years. Isn't that amazing. I can't believe we got through most of the entire winter without any snow.

HI Julie! Thanks for stopping over on my blog. I highly recommend Folks, This Ain't Normal, and also Coop: A Family, A Farm, and the Pursuit of One Good Egg, and The Town that Food Saved. All super reads in their own way!

I'm loving seeing your pictures with your girls in the snow. My girls will NOT go on snow. They will line up on the ramp from the coop, but will not put their tootsie on the ground. My new Roo, Snowball, does not have a problem with it, but since he's always the last out of the coop, he's stuck at the top of the ramp. Funny, funny chicken show, for sure! Peace to you, hope you're almost shoveled out up there! We got about 14"! ~Vonnie

I thought/hoped we were going to escape the storm . . . 9 inches later we didn't! Oh well, it melts fast this time of year!

Loved seeing your girls! I also envy that wood stove, how cozy your kitchen must have been!

I let my girls out today and one killed a mouse. The cat just sat by and watched. I really praised her...what a good hen!
