SPRING FEVER IN THE BARNYARD~

Spring fever, that's what it's called. Days lengthen and temperatures climb, sunshine and warm breezes find us. Our mood lightens and we feel energized...I believe animals relish in this feeling too..Take Winslow Homer...early this morning Winslow slipped out the door before I could get a leash on him. Enticed by the scent of a deer or fox, off into the woods he went just as fast as his little legs would carry him...a blind dog has no business in the woods alone...After a few tense minutes his solo jaunt was over...spring fever? and then you have Gladys and Henny...my two Houdinis. Thursday, upon my arrival home I found the girls freely roaming the yard. What in the world, for the life of me I could not figure out how they had gotten out of their pen.Had I left the gate open? Now, If I had not seen this with my own eyes I would not have believed it, but the next day I watched as in unison Gladys and Henny flew up into the air and with their legs hit the latch and pushed the gate open. The whole gang scurried out and acted as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred...spring fever?
My girl Loretta...when she was but a mere chick...Loretta continued to blossom...and this morning...I was honored...to be present...as Loretta...laid a perfectly formed petite white egg... tonight the song of peepers can be heard...spring fever!

I can't believe you got pictures of her laying the egg! How cool is that?

Wonderful pictures, as always. I especially love the very close shot of Winslow Homer. Yep, sounds like spring fever to me!

Ok, first I was gripped with terror as Winslow hit the woods, then roared laughing at the Houdini chickens, and dropped my jaw as the egg appeared. Spring at Dog Trot sounds lovely!

Lovely post - how clever of Gladys and Henny to lift the latch:) It's nice that Winslow Homer is still enjoying all the scents of the woods even though he can't see - and shouldn't be in there!

A perfect title for all the goings on at the farm.

Flying chickens and Winslow on the loose in the woods.

I saw a fox coming out from behind the barn yesterday morning. When he saw me he dashed across the road to go hide in the trees along side the street and the field. I can count on having cats soon disappear.

No frogs here in our dry land. But we do have toads, although they are silent.

I heard peepers on my way home from work the other day...I left fairly late. It was lovely music for the ride home! None near us though...sad!
I can't wait to start planting a bit of spring loveliness around here!

Courtney

Who ever said that chickens aren't SMART.

See, it just shows us that if we work together we can accomplish miracles!
