"NOVEMBER COMES AND NOVEMBER GOES, WITH THE LAST RED BERRIES AND THE FIRST WHITE SNOW; WITH NIGHT COMING EARLY, AND DAWN COMING LATE, AND ICE IN THE BUCKET AND FROST BY THE GATE. THE FIRE BURN AND THE KETTLE SING, AND EARTH SINKS TO REST UNTIL NEXT SPRING." ~ELIZABETH COATSWORTH~
On this cool October day Mr. Dog Trot and I boarded a ferry and headed down the bay to my childhood home of Long Island...my mom and dad were there to collect us and soon we were on our way to the "New Hill" cemetery...It was a day for saying goodbye...it is never easy losing a loved one, but on this Autumn day, as the sun filtered through the maple trees, the gentle wind whispering, we bowed our head's in prayer...An island community is a very special group of caring, giving people. It is one of the many things that I have missed since leaving...once an islander, always an islander. The memorial service was lovely, heartfelt and with a bit of humor. Later... as I placed my flowers at the graveside, I turned and was in awe of what I saw...standing behind us, the immediate family, was an entire island community, both young and old alike. My aunt would have been pleased.
Goodbyes are not forever.
Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean I'll miss you,
Until we meet again.
