A SPECIAL DAY~

Today is a special day here at Dog Trot Farm...my little dog trot, Winslow Homer, is having a birthday...today Winslow turns twelve years old...It seems like  just yesterday that Mr. Dog Trot and I walked into a pet store to purchase a brush for our Collie, Chloe... instead we came home with Winslow Homer and no brush...truly my one and only impulse purchase...ever...we adopt our pets for goodness sakes...
Winslow, a Carin Terrier, had been a very healthy dog, but at the age of 11 things quickly and dramatically took a turn for the worse. Diagnosed as a diabetic, with a failing liver, and losing his eye sight... we were not given much encouragement let alone hope... Never in my wildest dreams did I believe  my little man could, let alone would, reach this mild stone...We acquired numerous veterinary opinions, also a specialist, and it was a joint decision to do whatever we could to keep him with us, as long as he was not in pain...
After a year of highs and lows...numerous medications...twice daily insulin injections...twice weekly vet. appointments ...Winslow has persevered...In fact last week his blood sugar level was a perfect 90, his liver workup  came back encouraging ...Winslow's vet felt he was well enough to have his teeth cleaned...good dental health aids in a dogs liver function and contributes to overall  well being...I admit I was nervous at the thought of  Winslow Homer being put out and  going through this procedure...but... with three less teeth and sweet smelling breath...it was worth it...
"Happy Birthday Winslow Homer...you are the best little dog...ever...today is your special day and I am so thankful and grateful to have you in my life"..."now get out of the cat's food"...yes...he can still be naughty...

Happy Birthday Mr. Homer. He is adorable. Sweet smelling breath is a plus with any dog, man too. I bet he runs the place too. A bad habit like eating cat food is workable. At least he stays out of the cat litter, more than I can say for Emma and Lucy. We had Terra, a 4.5 lb poodle, for 16 wonderful years. She developed dementia/Alzeheimers and would wander away when she went out to potty. She was hard of hearing too. I would walk behind her and call then tap her on the shoulder to get her attention. She would be so excited to see me again. The love we have for our pets is only exceeded by the love they have for us. Much Love.

Oh Julie,
Happy birthday to dear little Winslow Homer! It's the love and tender care he is getting that keeps him going!
So glad he is doing so good on his 11th birthday!
Smokey just turned 10 in Sept. and being diabetic is doing really good now too! We had to switch to Lantus insulin ( only 125.00 a bottle!) about 6 months ago. He is such a good dog too!
I haven't been able to blog much lately but wanted to tell you how adorable that little Travis is in that photo on your last post! OMG just melts my heart to see that smile! Blessings abound in Maine this Thanksgiving for sure!!!
Big hugs from WI dear friend and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your clan!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY sweet Winslow Homer.
I know exactly what you mean about getting out of the cat's food. My Jack Russell is a pro at stealing the cat food.

I am so happy to hear that Winslow Homer is doing so well and celebrating his birthday. My little Winnie just turned 13 and is in fragile health, so we are in the same boat as you...celebrating every day. Happy Thanksgiving!

I am a new reader of your blog. I am so happy things are turning around for Winslow Homer. He has a face that melts the heart. I am sorry about Gladys. The way you wrote about her conveyed her personality in a good way and just knew the world lost a real good chick. Thanks for sharing snippets of your farm life, I must admit I will live my dream of one day having a farm vicariously through your blog. Happy Thanksgiving!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Winslow Homer!!! You and I are of the same age! I will turn 12 in 2013 also!!

No one ever told us being old was for the faint of heart, did they! Our humans just have to take our age in stride...as we do!
