~THE MORNING AFTER~

After a snowstorm, in the early morning hours, as the sun begins to rise, the earth sparkles in white brilliance...a cleansing of sort...mornings such as these remain etched in my mind...it is winter at her finest...
A foot of new fallen snow now blankets us here at Dog Trot Farm...Mr. Dog Trot spent the better part of last evening snow plowing, snow blowing, and shoveling... I unearthed our vehicles and eventually forged a trail to the chicken coop...with winter days such as these my flock are given special treats... peas, corn, oatmeal, berries, warm and inviting while a flock block for pecking aids in their boredom...hence "cooped in"

This morning, bright and early my little helper was ready and eager to go to work...after twenty minutes of layering... long johns, snow pants, heavy socks, boots, hat, hood, and mittens (this is granny's workout) Travis and I are out the door...We bid the tractor, excavator, and plow truck a hardy good morning and set off on our walk to granny's house. The morning is cold, but Travis and I don't mind morning chores are waiting...
we dig our way to the chicken coop...with a delivery of much appreciated warm water...Travis checks the nesting boxes for eggs and soon sings out..."I see them Wo Wo" my girls have continued to lay despite the cold winter weather...
For those of you who live south of us... who have experienced winter's wrath first hand... loss of power...trees down...utility crews from Maine are heading your way...Travis' dad and his crew left late last evening and have now arrived in Penn...I do hope everyone is up and running soon, we here in Maine understand the hardships one faces during such a storm...but there is a little boy who misses his daddy...as Travis said goodnight to his daddy on the phone...his final words were "see you tomorrow." Stay safe everyone...

What a sweet looking Travis with his nice snow shovel.
I hope his dad will soon return home. We only had about 3 to 4 inches so we can't complain.

I'm glad that your hens are happy and comfy enough to continue to lay eggs in this cold weather. You are doing a fine job of caring for them and they pay you back.

Stay warm and safe.

JB

We in Pennsylvania send Travis' Dad and crew a great big thanks! I live in northern Chester county and it is just terrible here, all ice and downed trees, closed roads, and all that fun. So we are very, very grateful to our northern neighbors in beautiful Maine for their help.
Sending many thanks!

I guess I should quit complaining about the weather (doesn't help anyhow) and I have been getting a lot of half finished items finished and I know it sounds like a long time until fall but I have started making some things for the big sale in Sept and I probably won't feel much like making things when we can get outside so better stay busy now when can't do much else. It is just way to cold for to long this year and just like everyone else I will be doing the happy dance when I can walk in the yard in the grass and not the snow. I keep turning the pages on the calender like that might help. Try and stay warm and keep eating a lot of eggs..Hugs

Such a lovely, snowy landscape. Two feet of snow fell on our wee patch...with a blowy wind as well. I hope Travis' dad returns swiftly, and safely.
Sending joy ...

Hi Julie. All you folks have really been pounded with winter weather and out here, although we've finally had a little rain, are facing a drought. Hopefully that doesn't mean bad forest fires this summer. There is always something to worry about. Keep warm and safe and just let that darling little man take care of you..Happy Monday..Judy

Julie, that's a beautiful shot of Travis Lloyd. Nice job! Of course the cuteness of the subject matter does have a little do with it, but the colors pop so nice in the white snow. Love it! We're buried down here in NH too, and it's just started snowing again. They're wanting another 4-6 tonight. I for one am so very, very ready for spring's greens and warmer temps. Our "new" antique house is very underinsulated and we're having a bit of a $$ shock with it all. And we just went through 2 cords of wood in 3 months, yikes! Hope you stay safe and warm up there and best wishes to your son for a safe trip down and back. ~Vonnie

That is quite a pile of snow you have...
Nothing like shoveling snow to encourage a hot cup of tea when you return inside.
You've got a great helper there I see too.
Stay warm.

Beautiful pictures! But yes, we have the winter woes here also (a brief break now, thankfully!). Your little helper is so adorable, and growing up way too fast! I hope someday to have a little helper with gathering the eggs ;) Bless you and yours, and hopefully Spring will be here soon! -Tammy
