~IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT~

In the still of the night...while I slept snug in my bed
an intruder found it's way into the chicken
coop......A discovery I made early this morning... my hens were all accounted for, but Ramon... my banty rooster was no where to be seen... his beautiful tail feathers lay scattered about ...feeders were overturned...bits of egg shell mixed in with pine shavings... clear evidence of a struggle... sadly one in which Ramon could not survive...Ramon, my brave little rooster... thank you for saving the lives of my girls... your girls...We will miss
 you...Godspeed my friend...

Such a brave boy! I am so sorry that he was met with disaster. I am glad to know he gave his life protecting his hens.
I am glad your other hens were safe. Any idea of the intruder?
So hard sometimes having chickens. I hope you are okay.

I'm so sorry. Perhaps (and this is just a suggestion) you can try what my husband do when he built our coop. He went below ground with concrete several inches so no predator could dig in and did the whole coop in hardware cloth wire and the heaviest wire possible. We've never had a predator. Anything to save some lives. Maggie

Oh Julie, Iam so sorry about your beautiful rooster Ramon. What a hard way to start a day. I'm so glad the girls were spared but the intruder will probably try again. I hope that you can secure them against another attack.

It is a sad time when one loses one of one's flock. We have recently had several of our cockerels and hens go missing overnight. Scattered feathers are a very sorry sight first thing in the morning.

I am so very sorry for the reasons you've been MIA. My thoughts and prayers to you, your niece and your family during this difficult time. And then the loss of Ramon on top of it all. You are one strong person. Enjoy the everyday things life offers.

Hello Julie! I'm so glad to check back and see that you've returned. I missed the updates on Mr. Dog Trot, and Winslow Homer and especially Travis Lloyd. I'm so sorry to learn of your neice's condition, my prayers are out to her. And also so sorry for the loss of Ramon, it's never easy to lose a good bird and he died doing his job to the best of his ability. All one can ask for, for sure. Welcome back, we're glad you've returned!! ~Vonnie

Awe so sorry to see him go ~ he was handsome and valiant !
Our hens and roos free range but on occasion ( luckily not often we too loose one of our flock :(
The hawks have been out in droves in our neck of the woods this week , so I have heard the roosters putting out the alarms more than usual .
