A RAINY DAY

Yes, the rain and wind did arrive. But, can you think of anything better to do on a rainy day than attend a local book sale? Especially one that benefits our town library. The hard cover books that I purchased are books that I have taken out over the years. These first two books -The Complete Rug Hooker- A Guide To The Craft by Joan Moshimer and The Hook Book by Alice Beatty and Mary Sargent- both books are essential to rug hookers whether a novice or seasoned pro. Better Homes and Gardens -Living The Country Life offers wonderful photographs showing the country look and style in some of the most delightful homes and gardens in America. This book is timeless. The Farm Journal's Complete Pie Cookbook. Now as far as I am concerned any cookbook with the words "farm" and "pie" in the title, has to be a good read and one which offers decadent pie recipes.
Dear Mr. Jefferson: Letter's From A Nantucket Gardener, by Laura Simon. "No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden." Thomas Jefferson. Ms. Simon turned to the works and letters of 18th-century statesman and avid horticulturist Thomas Jefferson. I am an admirer of Mr. Jefferson and have visited his Monticello home and gardens. I hope to find this book as delightful as it sounds.
Finally, The Big-Little World of Doc Pritham by Dorothy Clarke Wilson. This is the story of the life and times of an old Maine doctor who spent his whole professional life in Greenville, Maine- a village at the foot of Moosehead Lake. Doc Pritham was a country doctor, general practitioner willing to go anywhere at anytime ready to minister to anyone who needed him. He traveled thousands of miles through the Maine wilderness on horseback, foot, skates, snowshoes, boats, cars, and jumped aboard railroad cars. Dr. Pritham died in 1972 at the age of 92. He was still practicing medicine at the time of his death.
Dr. Pritham sounds like a very interesting man with lots of tales to tell about the people in and around the Maine Wilderness.

The total of my purchases, $10.00. I do believe I have acquired enough reading material should the rain decide to continue. What are some of your favorite books? I'd love to know.

I'm so jealous, looks like you got some great reading ahead. Seems like I've been so darn busy that there hasn't been time to do any reading lately. Maybe after the holidays! Have a great weekend, Dawn

Okay now I'm jealous, the book about Dr. Pritham sounds very interesting, I love reading books about people from Maine especially if it's a place I've vistited. We have a camp in Elmstream Township off the Golden Road so we used to go through Greenville to get there, I haven't been in years, but our boys still go up for bird hunting, it's a little to "primitive" for me. Enjoy you reading your new to you books.

I'm like you, anything with farm and pie together has to be good! I am a bit of a cookbook fanatic. All the books you brought home sound great. Happy reading.

I'm with you on "farm" and "pie"!

The Doc Pritham books sounds so interesting! I lived in Greenville and knew a little about the famous Doc, and have traveled over Pritham Ave, but now I need to find a copy of the book!

What great finds. Our Library was having a sale today too, and "gulp" I walked on by. I did stand in the doorway and took deep breaths to smell in the lovely used book smell. I don't think I would have got gems like you did though.

I love that you are a fan of To Kill A Mockingbird. Lets see, I love Girl of the Limberlost because it is about the woods and Moths. In fact I have some of Gene Stratton Porters first Editions that I am very proud of.
I love the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I love the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.
These are all my friends, I do read
all of L.M. Montgomery books once a year too.
So this is too long but I do love books and you got to have a rainy day. I think I would love the Doc Pritham book too.
I hope your day is lovely on Saturday.

There's nothing like a pile of 'new' books and a wt afternoon to sit and read them. I like the sound of Living the Country Life and the one about Dr Priddam. Lots of happy hours ahead for you I think:)

Dr. Pritham sounds like he has seen and cared for a lot of people through out Maine. Let us know how the book is. Oh, one other thing, the view through your window is to die for.

Julie you made great purchases! I checked out The Hook Book on Alibris and they wanted 30 bucks and then went to Joan Moshimer's site and I believe they were 16 or 17 dollars in paperback. I am thinking about ordering both of them :) Joan Moshimer's web site is a delight! I. Love. PIE.

Good Morning! I am thrilled to have found your blog through Amy at Verde Farm....thank you AMY! I have gone back through some of your archives and I am in love with your blog...you are a wonderful writer. You live in an area I have always loved through books but have never visited and have found your stories and pictures so very interesting. You live in a Bow House! Many years ago while living in British Columbia Canada I used to read Colonial Homes magazine and LOVED looking at the beautiful old (and reproduced) bow houses. They have such wonderful character. I am going to enjoy following you and your adventures in that beautiful part of the country. I hope you have a wonderful day...keep dry if you're still dealing with that nor-easter! Maura :)

Julie, sounds like a perfect way to spend a rainy day in a beautiful area. Your books sound wonderful. How amazing that doctor was still practicing at 92. I love Monticello myself and bet that one will be a great book.
You are such a great deal finder too...first your dollar store trip and now this. You are quite amazing :)

I always like to stock up on reading material. And then I pray for rain. Rain gives me the day off the farm and on the couch!
